On Saturday, August 29, 2020, we went to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park located in Cañon City, Colorado. And let me tell you it is a beautiful and breathtaking place, full of adventures and history that are family-friendly. Not to mention that they have America’s highest suspension bridge and zip line. Incredible! I am delighted to share with you my experience of visiting this amazing place.
First let me tell you a little about the history of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. The Bridge construction was completed in 1929. The Bridge is an impressive construction. When visiting you can definitely see all the hard work that was put into building it. The Gorge formation in itself took millions of years in the making. Another historic fact that captured my attention is that over 100 million years ago dinosaurs wandered the Royal Gorge region. Dinosaur fossils have been found less them 3 miles from the park. Wow! I love learning about dinosaurs, so the fact that these amazing creatures walked around this area was beyond exciting. Long after the dinosaurs, Native American Indians arrived in this area for hunting and gathering. So when visiting you are not only seeing an attraction, you are visiting a place that is full of history and incredible things to do!
When arriving you can see the Bridge from the parking area. This was my first time there, and it was just unbelievable. I couldn’t stop looking at the bridge and all the views. There are no words to describe it. After taking in the initial moment of arrival, we went into the Visitor Center, where you can get your tickets. The tickets are affordable and they include the bridge, the aerial gondola, the children’s playland, and the Plaza Theater. They also gave us a very descriptive map; that shows every part of the park. The Visitor Center has an information desk area and a very cute gift shop with many souvenirs.
After getting your tickets you will see the Water Clock, just behind the Visitor Center. It is striking! This is one of the rarest clocks in the world and it is the only one of its kind in the State of Colorado. Watching it and just hearing the water was so relaxing and at the same time astonishing.
The park also includes the Cliffside Patio restaurant; with food and refreshments, an Ice Cream Shop and the Gondola Loading Zone; which is America’s longest single span aerial gondolas. Just before reaching the Bridge, there is a charming coffee shop named Java at The Bridge. So you can stop by to get your favorite cup of coffee and sip away while walking through the bridge. Woohoo!
The bridge has a beautiful display of every State flag. When looking down from the bridge you can see rushing waters, people water rafting, and a nearby train track. The views here are breathtaking! There are also signs with historic information.
Once you pass the bridge there is a Theater and a restaurant named Bridge View BBQ; definitely, an amazing spot to eat while enjoying the views. In the Theater there is a small shop and they have a very informative documentary about the history of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. I loved that all around the park there are picnic tables and spots that you can stop by and enjoy. There is also a charming bar named Beer Garden where they have a variety of beers for you to buy.
Then there is the Tommy Knocker Playland that is full of many activities for kids. There are slides, an ice cream shop, a carousel and more. Perfect for any kid to have fun! My experience there was great. Covid precautions are taken, so that you can have a fun family day. Proper distancing is practiced and regular cleaning was performed to ensure a pleasant ride. We all know that the Covid pandemic has changed things; so just letting you know that this wonderful place is definitely taking all the necessary precautions. While inside the buildings, a mask is required and social distancing is practiced.
The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is home to the Elk Park Amphitheater were you can enjoy live music and a Grill on the Hill. And nearby there is another Gondola Loading Zone.
There are other activities that you can enjoy for an extra cost such as the Via Ferratta where you can climb the granite walls of the Royal Gorge with trained mountain guides. As well as, the Cloudscraper; this is the highest zip line in America, its elevation is more than 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River and the Skycoaster.
Having the opportunity to visit a place that is full of history and many remarkable things to do is the perfect combination to make this place one that is memorable. The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park definitely have it all. So if you are planning to travel or visit Colorado make sure to put the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park on your list. But that is not all; they are open all 365 days. Yay!
They have many different events throughout the year that you can enjoy. Their next event is BOO at the Bridge, which is a trick or treating event on Saturday, October 24, from 4:00pm to 7:30pm. So make sure to put it on your calendar!
